PE and Sport at Grateley

At Grateley, we work hard to provide a sporting curriculum that engages, motivates and inspires our children. Through our PE curriculum, we aim to support children in fulfilling their potential and achieving their personal best. Children are given the opportunity to learn new skills and techniques using a variety of equipment, with the support of professional coaches and teachers. Through a varied curriculum, children learn to enjoy physical activity and recognise its benefits. They learn life skills such as teamwork and cooperation; working together to make lessons a positive experience for all.

Even though we are a small school, we do not let this get in our way of providing as many sporting activities, both in school and externally, that we can. We compete against local schools in a variety of sporting areas and have been awarded the Silver Sports Mark two years in a row for our commitment to this area of our curriculum.

In June of 2020 we were awarded the Youth Sports Trust Recognition award for  'the fantastic provision you give. Despite being a small school, you never let barriers get in the way when providing opportunities for your students.' Sports Games Organiser for Test Valley.

Swimming Lessons

At Grateley, our swimming curriculum offer is in Years 3 and 4. This ensures that the majority of children, over a two year period, attain the government expectation for the end of KS2 swimming. If any child does not attain the expected level by the end of year 4 they will be given the opportunity to catch up in years 5 and 6. As well as this, we support parents by signposting them to external swimming sessions.

Each pupil is required to be able to do the following:

  • Perform safe self-rescue in different water based situations
  • Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • Use a range of strokes effectively, for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke.

Due to school closures our planned swimming curriculum did not take place this year. For the academic year 2020-21 we will ensure that those children in Year 4 in the academic year 2019-20 will have swimming lessons as part of their PE curriculum in the academic year 2020-21.
