Art

 Vision:

At Grateley Primary School, we value art and place a great emphasis on its importance as part of the curriculum. Art enables children to express themselves in a creative, imaginative manner. We intend to give the children many opportunities to develop their skills and to express their interests, thoughts and ideas with individuality and creativity flowing through everything they do.

The Art curriculum is planned and sequenced from Year R-6.  Areas of the Art curriculum covered include tile printing, still life, clay modelling, collage and sculpture as well as painting, sketching and exploring a variety of art mediums. All children learn about Artists or Designers through the Art curriculum and theses are linked to Art outcomes in each Key Stage.

Every child is an artist at Grateley Primary school – some just don’t realise! There is no right or wrong in art and we remove fear and encourage children to express their ideas. A key focus at Grateley through high quality inclusive practise is introducing and explicitly teaching appropriate vocabulary.

Joseph Beuys says: ‘Every man is an Artist.’

Intent:

The Art curriculum meets the Statutory Guidance from Year 1-6.

Art enables children to develop their imagination and creativity, to make connections through their inventive minds and gives children the skills to record their imagination and ideas. Art also encourages expression and visual thinking, which in turn helps children learn in other subjects.

At Grateley we believe that it is important for children to develop their observational skills through art, which helps children become better observers to the world around them. These skills can be developed with our wonderful environment at Grateley and Forest School.

Grateley believes in being part of the community so we enable children to participate in local art projects, encouraging families to celebrate skills used by all. The children enjoy designing Christmas cards and pictures for a whole school gallery and other fundraising events. Test Valley offers opportunities for local art within our environment and the children have opportunities to work with local artists and designers, engaging the children of all abilities to enhance their ideas and skills.

The Grateley values are taught through the opportunity to learn about different Artists and a range of mediums to create artwork. Our values to show excellence and enthusiasm are included within the Art learning.

Implementation:

Early Years:

In the Early Years, Art and Design plays an important role in children’s development. They are taught to represent their own ideas, thoughts and feelings through this creative subject. The children experiment with colour, texture and materials. Art and Design is linked to Aspiration 8. Children will explore, use and refine a variety of artistic effects to express their ideas and feelings.

Key Stage 1 and 2:

Each class has planned opportunities for Art through the Art Curriculum. These units are carefully chosen to reflect the knowledge and skills taught through Art to meet the end outcomes of the National Curriculum.

Children are taught to use a range of materials creatively, to use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination and to develop a wide range of art and design techniques. The children learn about the work of a range of artists, they explore the artist’s chosen mediums and use the artist’s work to inspire their own.

In KS2 they have the opportunity to improve their mastery of Art and Design through drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials.

In KS2 children are taught about a variety of artists, architects and designers in History.

Impact:

Children will become creative learners with a broad base of artistic skills. Creativity will be valued for its unique place in children’s learning, especially supporting the celebration of individuality. Children will have an appreciation of a range of artists and will move forward in their learning with increased confidence in their ability to explore and represent their imagination, ideas and feelings through art.
