Sustainability
Sustainability at Grateley Primary School
At Grateley Primary School, we believe that caring for our environment is everyone's responsibility. We are committed to developing environmentally responsible children who understand the importance of sustainability and recognise that the choices we make today can have a positive impact on our future. We believe that sustainable children are sustainable adults.
We want our children to develop a strong connection with the natural world, understand the challenges facing our planet and feel empowered to make a difference. Through our curriculum, Forest School provision and everyday school life, we provide opportunities for children to explore environmental issues, develop practical skills and become active participants in creating a more sustainable future.
We are a small, rural village school set on the border of the beautiful Wiltshire and Hampshire countryside. The Grateley village parishioners care about the environment directly outside their front door and we want the children to have the same passion for the immediate environment and the wider world.
Learning to Care for Our World
Sustainability is woven into learning across the curriculum. Children develop their understanding of the natural environment, biodiversity, climate, resources and the impact of human activity. Through science, geography and other curriculum subjects, pupils are encouraged to ask questions, investigate problems and consider how individuals and communities can protect the planet.
Our Forest School provision plays an important role in developing environmental awareness. By exploring the outdoors, observing seasonal changes and discovering, local habitats, children develop respect for wildlife and an appreciation of the importance of protecting our natural environment.
Small Actions, Lasting Impact
We encourage our pupils to recognise that small, everyday actions can make a difference. Across school, we promote responsible habits such as reducing waste, reusing materials, recycling where facilities allow, conserving water and electricity, and caring for our school grounds.
We seek opportunities to make thoughtful choices about the resources we use and encourage children to consider how their actions affect the environment. By involving pupils in practical initiatives, we help them understand that sustainability is not simply something we learn about; it is something we put into practice.
The children have been involved in the project of solar panels on the school roof and we are currently applying for planning permission. If this project goes ahead then the children will learn about how we are trying to be more efficient and saving energy.
They will be able to see over time the data and information of how we are saving money and being more energy efficient. This links to our school climate action plan (please see link at the bottom of the page).
Developing Responsible Children and Adults
At Grateley, we want our children to understand that they are part of a wider local and global community. We encourage them to think critically about environmental challenges, consider different perspectives and recognise their capacity to contribute to positive change.
Our school values, the 3Bs: Be Safe, Be Ready and Be Respectful, support this approach. We encourage children to respect the natural world, take responsibility for their actions and be ready to make positive choices for their community and the environment.
Eco Council
At Grateley Primary School, our Eco Council gives children a voice in making our school and the wider community more environmentally friendly. We believe that children should be empowered to take responsibility, share ideas and play an active role in protecting the world around them.
Our Eco Council brings together pupils who are passionate about sustainability and keen to make a positive difference. Council members work collaboratively to identify environmental issues within school, suggest improvements and encourage their peers to make thoughtful, sustainable choices.
What does our Eco Council do?
Our Eco Council helps to develop a culture of sustainability across Grateley by:
- Reducing waste: encouraging recycling, reusing resources and reducing unnecessary waste.
- Protecting nature: promoting biodiversity and caring for our school grounds and outdoor spaces.
- Saving energy and water: raising awareness of how small changes can conserve valuable resources.
- Developing environmental awareness: helping pupils understand local and global environmental challenges.
- Taking action: planning initiatives that make a practical difference to our school environment.
- Pupil voice: listening to ideas from across the school and working together to turn these ideas into action.
- Leaders: Take the lead with the schools mini allotments where they grow fruit and vegetables that they have harvested.
At Grateley, we recognise that meaningful change begins with small steps. By giving children the opportunity to lead environmental initiatives, we help them understand that their voices matter and their actions can make a difference.
Looking to the Future
Sustainability is an ongoing commitment. We aim to continue developing our environmental practices, making purposeful use of our outdoor spaces and providing meaningful opportunities for pupils to contribute to a greener future.
At Grateley Primary School, we want our children to leave us understanding that they have a role to play in protecting our planet, caring for their community and creating a more sustainable world for generations to come.
