Forest School at Grateley Primary School

At Grateley Primary School, we believe that some of the most meaningful learning happens outdoors. Our Forest School provision gives children the opportunity to explore, discover and learn in a natural environment, developing confidence, independence and a lifelong appreciation of the world around them.

Through regular outdoor sessions, children are encouraged to follow their curiosity, take appropriate risks, solve problems and work collaboratively. Forest School provides opportunities for practical, hands-on learning that develops, communication, creativity, resilience and teamwork, while supporting children's social, emotional and physical development. We believe that being outside in nature improves health and emotional wellbeing for everyone.

Our outdoor environment offers rich opportunities for children to observe seasonal changes, investigate habitats, discover wildlife and develop an understanding of the natural world. Through activities such as den building, natural art, imaginative play and woodland exploration, children learn to adapt, persevere and celebrate their achievements.

Forest School also supports our commitment to inclusion. The flexible, child-centred approach provides opportunities for children to learn in different ways, discover their strengths and develop a sense of belonging. Children are encouraged to make choices, learn from experiences and grow in confidence at their own pace.

We offer both year group sessions and nurture sessions over the year.

Our Forest School provision reflects our school values, the 3Bs: Be Safe, Be Ready and Be Respectful. Children learn to care for themselves, respect others and take responsibility for the outdoor environment.

At Grateley, Forest School is much more than learning outside. It is an opportunity for children to develop life skills, build positive relationships, nurture their wellbeing and create lasting memories through meaningful experiences in nature.

We want every child to leave Forest School with greater confidence, a stronger connection to the natural world and the belief that they can explore, discover and achieve great things.
